The TWELFTH House

Ashley Thiessen

Just as you and your mother were once seamlessly connected in the time before your birth, all life is connected together on a cultural, spiritual, and emotional level. Going down into the darkness of your emotional mind, you eventually emerge to discover how you are intertwined with all of creation, and vise versa. Here, you are in tune with the subtle undercurrents of the world, picking up on their fears, their dreams, their thoughts, their moods; trends, movements, and all your people's collective beliefs. These ideas slip into your head from the outside and you take them on as your own, like one small drop dissolving into an ocean of others.

The ELEVENTH House

Ashley Thiessen

In the 10th House we wore our career, our chosen role in society, as a badge of honour. But you still retained some semblance of a separate identity in wanting to be famous and publically revered. In the 11th House, you begin to truly become a part of something greater than yourself by giving that up and dissolving into the crowd.

The TENTH House

Ashley Thiessen

The final three Houses in the cycle are about finally leaving behind your seperate, autonomous self or good, and fusing your identity with something greater than yourself. This is where you reunite with the collective, losing who you are to become a more prominent member of society. The first step into this last quarter is crossing the Midheaven and entering your 10th House of your career and public life.

The NINTH House

Ashley Thiessen

This is a House of understanding and expansion. This is not a place for science and facts - it's where we attempt to offer answers to life’s big, unanswerable questions, and where we study profound topics more in-depth and offer our own insight into the world.

The EIGHTH House

Ashley Thiessen

The 8th House would all the secrets hidden in those walls, which the inhabitants know of but never speak about. The moans and cries in the bedroom at night. An urn holding ashes. Gossip over inheritance. Secret porn, condom, or sex toy stashes. The parents fighting over each other's families, over the debt one racked up and the affairs the other one had. All of these are examples of seeing the dark, unlikable side of someone you are in an intimate relationship with, and what parts of you you try to hide from the outside world.

The SEVENTH House

Ashley Thiessen

In many cultures, this first step out of adolescence and into adulthood coincides with marriage, or the formation of a serious romantic partnership. Young men courted young women, their families spoke to one another, and a wedding was announced. The daughter maybe given away to her new husband's family to live with them, or the newly wed couple would leave and build a home of their own. As a symbolic gesture in some places, she would replace her family surname with her new husband's name - literally leaving behind her old identity in favour of this new, shared one. No matter the place or period, the result was the same. No longer were these two seen as two separate people, but as a single married couple at the head of their own household.

The SIXTH House

Ashley Thiessen

The 6th House signals the end of the first half of our rotation around the wheel, and so marks the end of our personal childhood development. Before we pivot across the DC and into our 7th House, however, we need to make sure we've grown into a sensible, responsible individual, capable of taking care of ourselves, before we invite a partner into our lives.

The FIFTH House

Ashley Thiessen

The 5th House begins in the joys of our childhood. The movies we were excited to see, the television shows we watched every night, the music that was on the radio back then, the games we played, the toys we couldn't wait to get our hands on - all the things we loved so unapologetically, and coveted more than anything else in the world.

The FOURTH House

Ashley Thiessen

The 4th House is that familiar place we all sink into at the end of the day, when we turn away from the outside world and retreat into ourselves. It is the deepest, darkest, most intensely private and intimate place we own. The only people who see it are those who inhabit these same private places with us - our home, our family, our past, and our childhood. Ideally, these should all be womb-like places of comfort built on a secure foundation of trust, vulnerability, and protective, nurturing influences. But for some, the 4th House can be volatile and chaotic place we avoid coming home to. And for these people, the silence only brings the uneasiness and intrusive thoughts we'd been running away from all day.

The THIRD House

Ashley Thiessen

Rolling over turned to crawling, which turned to wobbly steps along the couch and coffee table, which turned to full, confident steps. Everything got put up a shelf higher. And as your eyes found new things, you proudly pointed and named things with an ever-growing vocabulary. Finally, your parents didn't have to fumble and guess what it was that you wanted. You could tell them yourself, and explain all your thoughts, feelings, motivations, and ideas to another person, and understand what they had to tell you in return.

The SECOND House

Ashley Thiessen

Any Planets here show which parts of your personality are further defined by what you own, and the sorts of things you want to possess. They describe how you treat your possessions and what sorts of things you like to buy. They show how you handle and acquire wealth, from your buying and spending habits to how well you save it for later. And altogether, they show what your core values are.

The FIRST House

Ashley Thiessen

Look at your personality, your chart, the entirety of who and what you are, and see it (metaphorically) as a house. Your Ascendant would be the front door, or what people see when they walk up and meet you for the first time. And your Planets in the 1st House would be the first thing they see when they open up that door.

The MIDHEAVEN and NADIR Axis

Ashley Thiessen

Both the MC and the IC have their roots in childhood, and our relationships to the authority figures we grew up under. From your mom, your dad, your grandparents, your teachers, priests, pastors, community leaders, and other influential adults, you learned the right and wrong ways to act. Through praise, shame, love, embarrassment, discipline, warmth, and encouragement, you were shown which traits were admired, which people laughed at, and what they didn't like. You, too, from interacting with your peers, helped to condition others into becoming more of what you respected and less of the rest. From your family, your school, your community, and your culture abroad, your MC/IC polarity developed. And from there, the rift grew deeper, and deeper, until you gave people one part of you and saved a second part only for yourself.

The ASCENDANT and DESCENDANT Axis

Ashley Thiessen

Whether or not you want to believe it, your DC is still very much a part of who you are. You might not see it, but it's there. Your lovers and spouses and everybody else in your Seventh House will tell you it's there, because that's how they see you. You see yourself through your AC, and partners see you through your DC. You might initially deny it. But take a step outside of yourself and look at your actions through the eyes of someone else, and you may realize how unlike yourself you are when you are around someone you love.

THE HOUSES: WHERE YOUR PERSONALITY SHINES

Ashley Thiessen

The circular journey from 1st to 12th represents the cycle of life. It begins in the 12th House, in the womb of your mother, where the two of you are intrinsically bound, seamlessly, spiritually, with one another. Your body and her body were one and the same. Her health, her emotions, her outside surroundings, and her voice, were all you knew. Then, the day you were born, the moment your body left hers and your umbilical cord was cut, you became a separate, autonomous individual. That exact moment, your Natal Chart was cast. You crossed the horizon line of your AC into this world, and you entered your First House.

PLUTO

Ashley Thiessen

In our own selves, we keep these aspects of our character a secret. We know that if anybody knew about our sexual depravity, our violent urges, how we plan on gaming the system to gain an advantage, that other people could use that knowledge against us. They could outsmart our clever manipulations, or use guilt and threats of anger to control us. With Pluto, you play your hand close to your chest, trust no one, and keep your plans to yourself.

NEPTUNE

Ashley Thiessen

Like a drop of water dissolving into the ocean, Neptune loses all sense of self to merge with the collective. It selflessly sacrifices itself - its own dreams, ideas, ambitions, goals, and happiness - to become what other people want (or need) them to be. It is martyr and a saviour, a victim and a god, with extraordinary compassion and a psychic insight into the inner worlds of other people.

URANUS

Ashley Thiessen

We look to this planet to see where society is experiencing great bouts of change and innovation, spurred by enlightenment and a desire to break out of old confines. It begins with artists and subcultures and works its way into the rest of society, influencing media, art, politics, and technology along the way. The negative side of Uranus often shakes things up out of boredom, a need for excitement, or a need to imprint its own individual ideology on the masses.

CHIRON

Ashley Thiessen

Chiron has lessons just like Saturn and Jupiter do. These inter-generational planets are all about the unique messages we have to teach the world. Jupiter holds out natural talents, the things we just "know" and happen to be good at, which we want to show the world how to do. Saturn is what we struggle with, what we've learned through hard experiences, and the wisdom we have to share. Chiron, finally, are the things we struggle with the most, which are the most painful and the most difficult. But it is gentle and understanding, and seeks to heal and teach through selfless altruism.

SATURN

Ashley Thiessen

Saturn is wise. It is not Jupiter's expansive, philosophical or spiritual wisdom; it is an old wisdom, withered with experience. When you look at your Saturn Sign, you see how your fears have governed you into thinking and acting the way that you do. But your caution makes you careful, and focussed, and able to center your energy over what you want to achieve. When you finally face your fears, Saturn will reward you with what you set out trying to do - rewards which reflect where your values lie, and what it is you want most in the world.
